Honestly, on my monitor the original looks a bit oversaturated, but on the 3DS it looks about perfect while the darkened screenshot looks, well. The "Original" shot flashes for half a second before it darkens to the "Darkened" palette and stays there. Sad to see that Earthbound, such a vibrant happy game, got hit the hardest. This same thing has been done to other 3DS VC releases, but to a much lesser degree. It's even more noticeable since, when you first load the game, the screen shows the 'accurate' bright display for half a second before throwing a dark overlay on top of it. The game feels rather dreary as all of the vibrant color has been dampened. While this is nothing new for their Virtual Console releases, Earthbound has received the darkening treatment on the 3DS, and to a higher degree than other SNES VC games released so far.
